The Skybox was designed as a partitioning of a larger plot belonging to an old whitewashed, thatched house belonging to the client’s family. the client didn’t want the fence separate the two plots. they wanted a light and spacious contemporary home for themselves and their 4 year-old daughter. Primus Architects was challenged to create a house which can connect with the old house and provide intimacy and serenity.

the solution was letting the house be the fence and ntroduce big skylights that would enable a relatively closed facade facing the other house. the oak was choosen by the architects as the facade, and treat it with iron sulphate to bring out the structure in the wood and darkening it. Iron sulphate gives yellow color for the chalk on family’s home. With 2 bedrooms the program amounted to a total of 75 m2 of living space. adding spatiality and experience of light to the relatively small program was the main focus on interior. The plan sets the bedrooms apart from the large living space and introduces an open hallway. Diagonal views stretch out through the whole building. The large glazed openings incorporate the sky. large sliding doors allow the inside and outside melt together.

The expose concrete base be the basic of balloon frame construction. it is about 30 x 30 mm oak list wrap the building. by using iron sulphate, the lists are treated which darkens and enhances the structure of the wood. Floor boards are oak whilst the insulation is mineral wool, roof 300 mm, walls 150 mm. the heat pump on the wall provided the heating, by reducing heating costs and CO2 emission. the ventilation through a natural chimney effect. A cast iron stove is for additional heating.
